Gabor B.’s DMS-800PV Review

Cary Audio customer, Gabor B., wrote a wonderful review on our DMS-800 Professional Version (PV) Network Audio Player.

“I have recently obtained a DMS-800PV, and I wanted to compare it to the DMS-700 that I purchased a year ago. I have been listening to the DMS-800PV for two weeks now, and I was hoping that the improvement was small enough over the DMS-700 that I could avoid the extra expense of trading up to it. As it turns out, the difference is quite significant in my system. I find there is more detail, which manifests as a wonderfully more noticeable decay of the instrumental notes, and a more drawn-out decay of a trailing vocal note. This imbues more harmonics to acoustic instruments, and it increases the realism. As a side effect, the imaging has improved, and the placement of each instrument is more clearly identifiable. The imaging has become truly holographic. In spite of the additional detail, there is still no harshness whatsoever, still very analog-like, which is to say realistic. It is what I really enjoyed about the DMS-700, but the DMS-800PV presents it in spades. I really liked the DMS-700, but I found I tended to turn up the volume a bit to hear some more of the details of the instruments and to soak up the harmonics of a good vocalist. With the DMS-800PV, all those details are present and enjoyable at lower volume levels. I did not feel I was lacking anything with the DMS-700 until I heard the DMS-800PV. I have to say, that depending on the source, the sound competes with and, in some cases, improves upon my nice analog set-up, which is a TNT VI with a VDH Crimson Stradivarius cartridge. These days I am predominantly streaming music, and I am enjoying the flexibility of listening to high-quality music without having to go buy a CD or an album, though I still enjoy spinning the physical medium on both counts. I am using an older Wadia as a CD transport, and utilizing the digital “in” of the Cary and its DAC to listen to CDs. It is a dramatic improvement over the excellent, but much older DAC of the Wadia 860. I am streaming with Qobuz as my provider. It is looking like I will keep it. Respectfully submitted, GB”
