“My Hifi chronology began with warm vintage Marantz receivers, to modern and exacting English-made solid-state technology, and finally to the tube-happy Cary Audio SLI-80.
Along the way, I auditioned and enjoyed countless other integrated amps with names we all admire. Like most audiophiles, I read hundreds of pages of reviews, and asked an infinite amount of outwardly uninteresting questions.
In the end, it’s the SLI-80 that I chose, and the changes to the sound of my system are nothing short of transformative. My first impression, well before any burn-in time, was that it immediately brought out the best qualities of the other components in my
stereo chain.
It revealed a bold, driving power – akin to being locked onto an electric mainline, so to speak – which made my EgglestonWorks loudspeakers sing in a way I’d never heard before.
Its sound is warm yet accurate, presenting tube-glowing musicality with a true and realistic clarity. The soundstage is wide and holographic yet each instruments holds a tangible weight in its space. Tight, well-pronounced bass and effortless highs make for
a sonic signature more akin to live performance than that of a studio setting.
If you’ve been obsessively comparing tube or tube hybrid integrated amps, I’d very highly recommend the Cary SLI-80 as the one to take seriously.
My Hifi has never sung with this level of synergy. And my music collection – almost everything I play – sounds profoundly new.”
